Cyclooxygenase-2 immunohistochemical expression in serrated polyps of the colon

چکیده
AIM OF THE STUDY Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) expression has been observed in a substantial percentage of classical adenomas of the large bowel. The aim of the study was to assess and compare the expression of COX-2 in serrated polyps of the colon. MATERIAL AND METHODS One hundred and nineteen serrated polyps were analyzed. There were 83 hyperplastic polyps (HP), 19 sessile serrated polyps (SSP) and 17 traditional serrated adenomas (TSA). COX-2 expression was assessed semi-quantitatively (0-2) and each lesion was fully characterized in terms of anatomical location, size, histology, age and sex of the patient. The general estimating equation (GEE) model with logit link was used in the statistical analysis. RESULTS Epithelial expression of COX-2 was found in 85/119 serrated polyps (71.43%): 57/83 (68.67%) HP, 16/19 (84.21%) SSP, and 12/17 (70.59%) TSA. In HP and SSP it was predominantly of weak (49/83 HP, 12/19 SSP), whereas in TSA it was mainly of medium/strong intensity (8/17). The TSA category was associated with more frequent COX-2 expression (OR = 7.00, 95% CI: 1.49-32.88, p = 0.014) than HP, but such relation was not found for SSP vs. HP (p > 0.1). No associations between COX-2 expression and clinical parameters were found. CONCLUSIONS Immunohistochemical COX-2 expression cannot serve as a diagnostic adjunct to differentiate HP and SSP.

Evaluating the frequency of MLH-1 Loss in serrated polyps of colon: a single center study from Southern Iran
AIM Evaluation of the role of MLH-1 loss in serrated polyps of colon in a population of South of Iran. BACKGROUND There has been extensive change in classification and pathogenesis of serrated polyps of the colon during the last 10 years. The new classification is mostly based on the knowledge of the molecular pathogenesis and the rate of progression to colorectal cancer in these types of pol...
متن کاملSerrated Adenoma of Gastric Antrum: Alteration of Mucin Expression Profile and its Role in Carcinogenesis
Serrated adenomas usually occur in colon, the gastric localization is extremely rare. These polyps have their own carcinogenetic pathway with microsatellite instability. In this report, we present a serrated adenoma localized in gastric antrum with four control endoscopies and biopsies. Immunohistochemical panel of MUC1, MUC2, MUC5AC, and MUC6 was applied to the biopsies. Serrated component, MU...
متن کاملExpression of Annexin A10 in Serrated Polyps Predicts the Development of Metachronous Serrated Polyps
OBJECTIVES The ability to differentiate histological characteristics between serrated polyps (SPs) and make a pathological diagnosis of a sessile serrated polyp (SSP) is highly variable. Recent studies have shown that immunohistochemical (IHC) expression of Annexin A10 (ANXA10) is a marker of a SSP. However, the clinical utility of ANXA10 expression in patients with SPs is unknown. The objectiv...
متن کاملProtein expression of Fragile Histidine Triad and cyclooxgenase-2 in serrated neoplasia of the colorectum.
The adenoma-carcinoma sequence (ACS) and the serrated pathway are two distinct developmental routes leading to the formation of colorectal carcinoma (CRC). However, the mechanism triggered by the serrated pathway remains unclear. Therefore, to clarify the molecular and clinicopathological characteristics of the serrated tumorigenic pathway, immunohistochemistry was used to examine the expressio...
متن کاملRNA Sequencing of Sessile Serrated Colon Polyps Identifies Differentially Expressed Genes and Immunohistochemical Markers
BACKGROUND Sessile serrated adenomas/polyps (SSA/Ps) may account for 20-30% of colon cancers. Although large SSA/Ps are generally recognized phenotypically, small (<1 cm) or dysplastic SSA/Ps are difficult to differentiate from hyperplastic or small adenomatous polyps by endoscopy and histopathology. Our aim was to define the comprehensive gene expression phenotype of SSA/Ps to better define th...
